Description
I don't know why they call this beautiful bird bald, because the American Bald Eagle is anything but bald. Seems their white very much feathered heads against their rich chocolate brown bodies appeared bald to someone. The Bald Eagle is the national emblem of the United States and is also a bird revered in Indian cultures.
Bald eagles are protected as they were once severely endangered, but under protection their status is much improved.
Interesting little factoid about the bald eagle that even though they are considered regal today, It wasn't always the case for some. The eagle is known for being a thief and will harass smaller birds of prey like the osprey in order to confiscate their hard earned catch.
If it had been up to Benjamin Franklin who didn't like the eagles thieving ways and a bird of bad moral character, the national bird would have been a turkey.
