Description
This Anhinga is likely a young female. Anhinga are fishing birds and are absolutely fascinating to watch. Anhingas doing their fishing either slightly submerged or completely submerges and as I have witnessed they can completely submerge and come up many feet away in an entirely different location. It's not uncommon to see their nothing but their head and long slender snake like necks moving across the water.
Because of their unique shape and particularly their tail feathers they have been called a water turkey. Surprisingly The Anhinga does not have waterproof feathers. You might be thinking that would serve them how? This makes it possible to slowly sink below the surface and glide through the water in search of their fresh catch.
After this interesting fishing bird is done, you will see them sitting with wings spread, drying themselves in the sun.
Here in Florida we have been having a fantastic time exploring the wetlands with all of it's wildlife and birds.
