Artist's Description
The Basilica Cistern in Turkey is a beautiful subterranean cistern, built to provide running water for Istanbul. History says that there were 7000 slaves used in the construction, 100s losing their lives during the construction.
Throughout the cistern there are a number of modern day pieces of art. At least 3 of them are of men who appear frail and thin. As I researched this cistern realizing how many lost their lives in the construction I wondered of these lifeless statutes are a homage to those lost souls.
The 4 statues in the foreground appear to be men bathing. As far as I know the cistern was never used for bathing, but provided water for Istanbul.
About Rebecca Herranen

In a world filled with constant noise & distractions, I find solace in the simple things in life & the unspoiled beauty of nature. A way to connect with the Earth and find inner peace. I hope to leave behind a legacy of my love for nature through my photography, hoping to inspire others to find their own sense of solitude in the beauty of the world that surrounds them. Through my art, I invite you to slow down, breathe in the simple beauty and recognize the deep sense of tranquility that the natural world offers. This is your invitation to make those connections, and in doing so find a deeper sense of peace & purpose in life. My Website I work with my husband Timo, traveling and photographing our journey along the way....
