Description
Located in Istanbul, Turkey, the Basilica Cistern is an ancient underground reservoir dating back to the 6th century during the Byzantine era. This subterranean marvel is an engineering feat designed to store water for the Great Palace. A total of 336 columns supports the arched ceilings. Neglected on and off throughout history, the cistern was rediscovered in the 20th century. Restored, now several stone statues enhance its otherworldly beauty. Today it is a testament of the city of Istanbul's rich architectural heritage.
