Description
A somewhat lessor known architectural wonder in Rome is the Castel Sant'Angelo or Castle of Angels sits along the Tiber River. A small army of angels stand watch over the bridge leading up to the castle entrance with the Archangel overlooking the river below.
Long before it belonged to the church, it was a monument to various pagan Roman emperors.
In order to reach the castle itself you must walk through the original mausoleum where you will eventually reach the emperors burial chamber. The exterior walls standing as tall as 160 feet were like an artificial mountain, a fortress indeed. It served as a refuge for the papacy with a secret passage between the Vatican and the castle.
From the top there are stunning view of Rome in all directions.
