Description
A beautiful double rainbow over golden lava fields in Iceland. Even though not apparently that rare, for me, this was a STOP the car moment! In all my life I had never seen a double rainbow. That was until we visited Iceland. They are a frequent occurrence there and another beautiful feature added to the already stunning landscape of Iceland.
Did you know that the colors of the outside rainbow are in reverse to the inner rainbow? I had to look closely, but it's true. The double rainbow effect happens when the sunlight refracts not just once, but twice inside the the tiny water particles suspended the the air like miniature prisms. You might notice the darked band between the two rainbows, this is known as the Alexander's band. What causes that, I don't know. Couldn't quite wrap my head around that.
Double rainbows usually happen when the sun is low on the horizon. That would be Iceland especially during October as you can tell the grass covering the lava fields has turned a beautiful golden color.
