Description
The Sagrada Familia also known as Basílica de la Sagrada Família is the architectural design of Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi's works are found all throughout Barcelona, Spain. The Sagrada Familia is likely the most well known, not to say that his other architectural marvels are not enormously popular.
Construction of the cathedral began in March 1882. Working on the Sagrada Familia is where Gaudi spent the remainder of his life, transforming the basilica into a Gothic and Art Nouveau masterpiece. At the time of his death, the basilica was less than 25% complete. In 2015 it was 75% complete. It estimated completion date is somewhere between 2030 and 2032.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the cathedral was closed to visitors and construction was halted. This was the first time construction had been stopped since the Spanish Civil War.
This ceiling ascends 200 feet and the colors change throughout the day as the sun moves shining through the many stained glass windows of multiple colors.
