Description
Being that Iceland is so isolated, the Icelandic sheep is one of the purest breeds on the earth as are the Icelandic horses. There are double the amount of sheep in Iceland as there are actual people.
The Icelandic sheep are are very strong and have strong immune systems making them perfectly suited for the extreme weather conditions in Iceland.
In early times their soft wool was used to make delicate lace, undergarments and baby clothing. The outer wool since it is water proof was used water resistant clothing. When the two types of wool were combined they make beautiful sweaters of which could only be found in Iceland. You will find them in Iceland to this day.
The sheep run free all over Iceland. You will see them at the top of waterfalls, on steep hills and in deep canyons. They aren't corralled or fenced in, they just roam wherever they want to on the island. Various sheep owned by one, will mix with others. Then come September, they are all gathered up, which as you can imagine is quite the process. They are sorted by their ear tags. Such a sight to see that there are actually tours now in September. Since they are everywhere, watch out, they are skittish in our experience and will take off running, even into oncoming traffic.
