Description
The Jesus Christ Lizard is so named because it has the ability walk on water. The common Brown Basilisk Lizard usually lives in the trees, but is never far from water. When the feel they are in danger they will drop right out of their tree and sprint, standing on their hind legs to the waters edge and keep on running across the surface of the water for away from danger. In order to accomplish this, their back feet are slightly webbed. Running as if their life might depend on it, the webbed feet slap the water creating a little air pocket which keeps them above the waters surface. Eventually they will sink, but they go as much as 15 feet, maybe a little more. As you can imagine considering the webbing on their feet, they are excellent swimmers too.
The Basilisk will grow to about 2 feet and that is about the size of this one. Tip of nose to tip of tail that is. Males have a distinctive crest on the back of their heads in order to impress females. This one was even using a tiny flower to be even more attractive.
