Description
Just Northeast of the tiny town of Kalambaka in the Pineios Valley is a cluster of the most incredible feats of architecture, monasteries sitting atop of sandstone pinnacles rising from the lush green valley floor. Not connected to any landmass one can only imagine hauling all of the building materials up pretty much buck by bucket. Perched over 1300 feet in the air, the Holy Trinity Monastery is one of an original 24. just 6 are still active today.
The area is known as Meteora, meaning "Suspended in the air" and is a UNESCO World Heritage site today. This particular monastery is likely the most photographed and was filmed in the James Bond movie, "For Your Eyes Only". At one time 50 monks lived at the monastery, today it is about 5.
Photographing Meteora was a priority for me while on our trip to Greece. You can imagine my disappointment when we arrived and it was raining. But like the day I photographed White Sands, New Mexico I just went ahead and took the shot. Honestly I couldn't be happier in the way they turned out.
