Description
Very large male iguana still wearing his mating colors. These lizards are generally herbivores, but are also opportunistic and are seen hanging around bird rookeries, hoping to snatch an egg or two. A large male reptile this size can weigh close to 11 pounds and be 6.5 feet long. These iguanas are excellent swimmers and can leap from tree to tree or drop as much as 40 feet onto concrete without injury. Like other lizards, if captured by their tail they can let it go and will grow another one.
Interesting curiosity is their extreme need for warm tropical temperatures. If temperatures drop down into the 60s and below, they become totally immobile and fall out of trees and lie on the ground unable to move until the temperatures warm back up.
