Description
Early morning in one of my favorite wetland locations, through an undisturbed sea of green duckweed, up popped this otter with his face covered in duckweed. He swam directly toward me and even came up on to the shore within 8-10 feet of me as if he/she didn't see me. I thought maybe otters don't have good eyesight, but when it comes to marine life, an otter has very good eyesight above and below the water surface. It's moments like this that gets me up early in the morning and out the door working on my wildlife photography.
Duckweed, the tiny little leaves all over this otters face are in the family of the tiniest flowering plants known. Each of the little leaves is a plant all on it's own floating on the surface of still waters like in these wetlands. Duckweed is an extremely important food source for wildlife like waterfowl that are regularly seen in wetlands in the Wellington, Florida area where this otter was photographed. Duckweed is very high in protein and edible even for humans, tasting something like spinach. I need to find a source for my own personal consumption.
