Description
Port wine comes from the northern region of Portugal in the Douro Valley. True port wines can only come from this region. The northern town of Porto is the original hub for distribution of port wine. You are probably familiar with a red port wine, but as this beautifully shows there are at least 12 different types of port wine.
Port wine is generally considered a desert wine, but it comes in dry, semi-dry and white. Colors range from white, to rose, to deep red and there is even a aged tawny port. Most varieties are average price, but some can range into the 100+ a bottle range.
If you ever get to Portugal, you must pick up some port wine and some of those incredible Portuguese pastries, Pastel de Nata and let yourself slide right into a sugar coma. It will be a desert you will not soon forget.
