Description
San Clemente is a smaller beach community in California. The San Clemente Pier is an icon and a favorite place to enjoy the sunset and salt air by both locals and tourists alike. This wooden structure is 1200 feet long and has an interesting past. At one point in time rum smugglers used the San Clemente Pier as drop spot. In the darkness of night smuggler running between Mexico and Canada would offload their goods through a trap door beneath the pier.
The pier has taken a beating from a few storms. In 1939 50% of the pier was washed away and in 1983 36% of the pier was destroyed. The month of October has numerous events in San Clemente to raise funds to help with keeping the pier in good condition.
Whether during the heat of the summer or cool winter days, the pier is always busy with people. The Fisherman's restaurant is always busy and you can't ask for a better location to watch the sunset and surfers below. After stroll the pier, talk to the local fishermen. There is always something interesting going on and you might even hear a fishtail too.
