Description
It was just 12 degrees. We had been at the Bosque Del Apache well before sunrise. As the sun was casting the slightest thin orange glow on the frozen horizon, water birds floating in the shallow waters of the bosque began to move around in the dim light of dawn.
Setting up my camera gear in the frosty air, still in mostly darkness I hear a tremendous racket from coming from the north. I turn to see 100s if not 1000s of Snow Geese heading toward what is known as The Flight Deck in the now twighlight sky set ablaze in a soft orange. Honking as if in a chorus, it was incredible sight to see and hear.
The Snow Geese and a few Sandhill Cranes began to make their landing on the ice that covered The Flight Deck. Somewhat of a comical sight to see as you might imagine as they land on the slippery ice runway. A few geese were curious once arriving, watching us, watching them. However most of the old timers simply fluffed up and went back to sleep waiting for the sun to warm the frozen water and ground a bit more before breakfast would be served.
Snow Geese frequent the Bosque Del Apache, many migrating further south, while others hang out for a bit. A beautiful sight to witness if you ever have the chance to see it. If you already have then let this be a reminder of the beautiful wildlife experience you enjoyed.
