Description
The Salt River wild horse stallions are magnificent animals that reside in the rugged terrain along the Salt River in Arizona. These wild horses exude untamed beauty and strength with their long flowing manes and muscular bodies. These horses are believed to be descendants of the horse brought by the Spaniards having either escaped or released into the wild. Today they are a much love piece of the American Southwest.
For many years these wild horse roamed free, but with urbanization, their survival has been threatened. Recently the Forest Service has considered their removal for what they believe is their safety and that of humans. (This image was taken with a very long zoom lens). The outcry has been tremendous and in 2016 a law was enacted to protect these beautiful creatures. Today their are efforts to manage the herds, primarily by means of fertility control.
Stallions are responsible for protecting their herd of mares and foals from any potential threats. This handsome fella had been busy protecting his girls from a younger stallion who was interested and wasn't easily deterred. This particular stallion was covered in sweat and had bite marks all over. Here is was staring down his competition moments before they went into a fierce battle. There herd moved on down the river and the younger stallion following at short distance. We never saw them again.

Rebecca – I wanted to let you know that your stunning image was a top-fifteen candidate for selection as the June 2023 "Photo of the Month" in the Go Take a Hike Photography Group. Even though not advancing as a finalist, this image is most worthy of recognition as a superb photographic effort, so congratulations and well done!
