Description
These little vervet monkeys were all around the property of the andBeyond Kirkman Kamp, Sabi Sands where we went of safari for 3 days. When we arrived they filled the trees just outside our guest suite, living in very social groups of 10 to 70 individuals. Their antics were a delight to watch at almost any time of day.
Vervets have very distinctive warning calls for their four major predators, leopards, eagles, pythons, and baboons. It's believed that they have 30 distinctive warning calls and there is even one for humans indicating they seem to differentiate between predators who are land animals and those that fly.
Mothers recognize the screams of their babies and even seem to know which mother another baby belongs to when it screams, looking towards the direction of the babies mother. The entire group of females will look after everyone else's babies too.
The Vervet Monkey is native to Africa, more specifically South Africa.
