Description
This white rhino picture with 3 white rhinos, a mom, a baby calf and a very large male in the background might look sweet, but it's actually a very dangerous situation.
I see this mom as a very vigilant mom as most moms usually are, even in the animal kingdom. This is a life or death situation for that white rhino calf. It was mating season, and that very large male in the background would do just about anything, including kill the baby in order to mate with that female. Until he has that opportunity he will guard her.
Mom had no time to rest. As much as possible she always had herself between her little one and the danger lurking nearby. But as babies do, he/she was curious and was constantly on the move exploring. At this very moment he was interested in our safari truck on the road.
Thankfully after a century of being protected in the Endangered category, killed by poachers for their horns, the white rhino has been upgraded to the Threatened category. There are approximately 18,000 to 27,000 white rhino in protected areas and reserves. These 3 were in a protected area along the edge of Kruger National Park in South Africa.
As of today the white rhino is the only rhino species out of 5 that is no longer on the Endangered list. White Rhinos were once thought to be extinct so wildlife conservation efforts have come a long way with education and the constant efforts to protect the White Rhino species.
