Description
Great white egret in flight, white wings fully outstretched while gliding over the Florida wetlands. Morning sunlight illuminating the white feathers.
The Great Egret is technically a heron with white feathers. They are a very elegant looking bird with a more slight build then other birds in the heron family. During mating season great egrets put on their ornamental plumage to attract a mate. Unfortunately the reason they became nearly extinct at one point in history,
The great egret is the symbol of one of the oldest environmental organizations, the Audubon Society.
The great egrets are mostly waders, walking slowly through the marsh and wetlands. They have been known to occasionally resort to swimming for their meal.
