This Anhinga seems to feel it is up to him to oversee all of these wetlands because he sits here every day in the middle of all that is going on. Birds busily flying back and forth building nests and taking care of nestlings. But not him. Always perched at the top of the rustic tree stump looking regal. He is there every time we arrive and he is still sitting there when we leave. Just watching what's going on.
Anhingas are water birds and hunt by swimming under under water and spearing their pray with their sharp beaks. They can swim very long distances and can catch a fish, toss it in the air and swallow it whole. They are also called by some, a snake head as all you will see is their long neck and head moving across the water. The are very pretty when the spread their wings in the sun to dry off after a swim.
