Artist's Description

The Audubon Society describes the Roseate Spoonbill as beautiful from a distance and bizarre when you see them up close. I could not have described them in a better way. The Roseate Spoonbill has the most beautiful pink feathers, but then they have this bald head, somewhat like a vulture and this fantastical flat spoon shaped bill which is why they are called spoonbills.
Spoonbills spend their time hanging out with wading birds. In shallow waters they slowly walk forward, swinging their heads from side to side, sifting through the murky water. On this day the surface of the water was covered with a green algae.
As far as their size, compared to other birds they are amongst the largest. They spend time in fresh, brackish and marine waters, that would include wetlands, swamps, mangroves and bays. Spoonbills nest along the water in the trees, laying 2-3 spotted brown eggs that will hatch in about 23 days. Both parents care for the young who will take flight at about 7-8 weeks.
