Description
Who doesn't love flamingos? Flamingos are very social birds and here are many birds sleeping in the afternoon sun together. Some would say they are pink, others would say they are orange. What do you think?
The flamingo has been a fascination so far back that they are found painted on a cave wall dating back to 5000 BC. Flamingos have long skinny legs, a strong hooked bills. They are so loved that they have been immortalized as pink plastic lawn ornaments and there is even a famous hotel in Las Vegas, named the Flamingo.
The flamingos color comes from the food it eats, algae and small crustaceans. The more that is consumed, the brighter their coloring becomes.
Flamingos do fly, but they need some room to make a run for it and flying into the wind helps these beautiful birds lift off. The flamingo nest is a pile of mud 1-2 feet tall and the eggs are laid in the slight indentation on top. Flamingos lay just one egg and the chicks stay on the nest for 5-12 days before venturing out with their parents.
